I found this recipe at the Wicked Spatula. Part of the immediate appeal was the absolute minimalism of the dish. The recipe reminded me of Marcella Hazan's extremely simple yet delectable Tomato Sauce (an onion, butter, canned tomatoes and a little salt). This dish was prepped and cooked in a matter of minutes. The original recipe called for 2 teaspoons of red pepper flakes which seemed like a lot of heat. I scaled it back to just over 1 tsp in my version and the dish had more than enough hell-fire for my taste. If I make this dish again I'll use less pepper flakes or I'll serve it with a dollop of sour cream or yogurt to cut the heat.
